Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. It is a normal, natural and pleasant state of the mind that we have all experienced at various times. At night when we fall asleep we all pass through a point when entering sleep called the Hypnoidal Point a state of awareness, when one is half awake and half asleep, relaxed and comfortable, safe and secure, aware yet not bothered.
We often experience this trance like state in our everyday lives, for example; becoming totally involved reading an absorbing book, watching a movie or a television program, daydreaming, driving along a familiar route and realising you do not remember part of the journey, hypnosis is a relaxed state of mind. It is used by people from all walks of life to effectively change or improve many aspects of their lives.
A popular misconception is that a Hypnotherapist controls people and can make them do things against their will, this is not so. You cannot be hypnotized against your will and will not accept any suggestions that are contrary to your personal, ethical or religious beliefs. This misconception of control comes about from people having seen or heard about stage hypnosis where the hypnotist has the hypnotised person doing things that would appear to be against there will. Most subjects chosen by a stage hypnotist to be on stage fall into the category of what is known as a somnambulist a person of high suggestibility. Also these people chosen are outgoing types and can be uninhibited in there every day behaviours, the life of the party types. So adding hypnosis and hypnotic suggestions along with an experienced and entertaining hypnotist to the mix you can have a highly entertaining show.
Also another misconception is that hypnosis is the same as sleep. Going into hypnosis isn’t the same as being asleep. People often say things like “I could hear every word you were saying”, or “I felt like I could open my eyes if I wanted to”. It is vital to learn that hypnosis isn’t like being asleep – you can be aware of everything around you, just like when you meditate (in fact the two states are nearly identical). In hypnosis, you simply have a stronger focus internally, plus wonderful deep relaxation.
We are often asked “are the results of hypnotherapy permanent”? Suggestions stay with some individuals indefinitely, others need reinforcement. The effects of hypnosis increase; the more the techniques are practiced and post-hypnotic suggestions are brought into play, the more permanent the results become. If you have the belief that you can be hypnotised, and the expectation that you will be hypnotised, then you will be hypnotized — every time.
